TMG Mentioned in The Daily Beast, Excerpt from Randall Lane's "The Zeroes"

Washington, D.C. (July 7, 2010) – The Daily Beast this week ran an excerpt from former TMG Editor and current Daily Beast Editor-at-Large Randall Lane’s forthcoming book, The Zeroes: My Misadventures in the Decade Wall Street Went Insane on his experiences working on Hi! magazine at TMG.  Hi! was born in the aftermath of 9/11 when the State Department, as part of a public diplomacy program, decided to launch a magazine about American culture which would be translated into Arabic and sold across the Arab world.

Lane wrote, “The State Department hired a highly regarded Washington-based custom media company, TMG which in turn hired me. Working with a squad of Arab-born Americans, including a smart, opinionated Libyan, a poetic Syrian, and a diligent Palestinian, I would craft America’s public face for the part of the world that hated us most, as translated via the cover and substance of a glossy magazine.”

Randall writes that as the memory of 9/11 began to fade and the initiative’s leadership at the State Department changed, “so did the magazine’s utopian mission.”  The turning point was a meeting that Randall refers to now as “Donkeygate.”  Read all about it here.
